Zannoni still in the title fight after finishing second

The Openbank Aspar Team rider has returned to the top positions in the Austrian GP and only a penalty has prevented him from getting on the podium in both races

MotoE will crown the 2024 champion at its final GP in Misano. The fight for the electric category title is still open before the last GP and, although four different riders have a mathematical chance of being champions, Héctor Garzó is the best positioned to achieve it. With 50 points left, the Spanish has a 38-point advantage over Mattia Casadei, 44 over Openbank Aspar Team rider Kevin Zannoni and 49 over Óscar Gutiérrez. In the Team’s World Championship, Openbank Aspar also arrives in Misano with a chance of being crowned champion, as it is second in the standings, 18 points behind the leader.

In the Red Bull Ring, Óscar Gutiérrez has won the first race after starting from pole. The Spanish has lost the first position with the category leader, Héctor Garzó, at the start. Garzó has led for much of the race, but with two laps to go, Gutiérrez has overtaken him to take the win. Openbank Aspar Team rider Kevin Zannoni has crossed the finish line in third position after a great comeback. Zannoni has started from third position, but at the start he has done a mistake and has dropped to eighth place. From that moment on, the Italian has begun to recover positions and, on the last lap, he has overtaken two riders to take third place. However, on that last lap, Zannoni has exceeded the track limits, for which he has received a penalty that forced him to drop one position and has finished fourth. Mattia Casadei has completed the podium after Zannoni's penalty. In the second race, Gutiérrez, Garzó and Zannoni have been once again the protagonists. The two Spanish riders have exchanged some overtakings for the lead throughout the race, while Zannoni has remained in third place, always close to them. On the last lap, Gutiérrez has crashed while he was leading, a crash that has condemned his chances of being champion. Garzó has won the race after finishing just 69 thousandths ahead of Zannoni, who has ended second, while Casadei has been third again.

The Openbank Aspar Team rider Jordi Torres has been very competitive in the two races in Austria. In the first, Torres has always remained in the leading group and has even managed to ride in podium positions. Finally, he has finished in fifth place after a great battle on the last lap with his teammate and Casadei. Torres has fought again for the leading positions in the second race and has improved his result from the first race by finishing fourth. The weekend in the Red Bull Ring has exceeded the Openbank Aspar Team rider expectations. Torres has his mind set on the last GP of the year, which will be held in Misano in three weeks.

4th/2nd Kevin Zannoni: “It has been a good weekend. The first race has been a shame. I have come back to the podium, but I have lost third place because I have exceeded the track limits in a very difficult corner where I have avoided contact with another rider. In the second race I have finished second and I am very happy.”

5th/4th Jordi Torres: “Today I have given my all, I have fought in every corner and in every braking. It has been a positive weekend; I have always been in front and the bike is going really well. I cannot ask for more. I still struggle with the speed on the straight, but I fight with what I have. My expectation for the weekend was to finish around twelfth position, so being fifth and fourth is a very good result.”
