Unfortunate weekend for Torres and Zannoni

The Power Electronics Aspar Team leaves the Red Bull Ring with a ninth-place finish as its best result in the two races held today

The Power Electronics Aspar Team struggled at the Austrian Grand Prix to finish close to the leaders. Jordi Torres' ninth place in the second MotoE race at the Red Bull Ring is the team's best result in this third weekend of competition. Torres started from the third row of the grid after a timed practice session in which he gave his all, and this starting position made it difficult for him to fight for higher goals on the Austrian track. The Spanish rider lost just over three seconds to the leader in the first two laps of the race, but for the rest of the race he was sometimes faster than the leader and was able to cut the gap by eight tenths of a second to cross the finish line 2.3 seconds behind the weekend's big winner, Italian Matteo Ferrari, who completed a double victory. In the first race, Torres fell behind the leading group and finished tenth, more than six seconds behind Ferrari.

Kevin Zannoni ended Saturday at the Red Bull Ring with a crash on the second corner of the track, just after the race had started. The Italian was able to return to the track to finish the race, but with no chance of scoring points, more than a minute behind the winner. In the morning, Zannoni had been thirteenth after a hard-fought comeback from last place on the grid, a position to which he was condemned by another crash, this time in qualifying. With these results, the Power Electronics Aspar Team riders drop to fourth place overall in the case of Jordi Torres and ninth in the case of Kevin Zannoni. Andrea Mantovani and Alessandro Zaccone remain ahead, although they were unable to shine this weekend or return to the podium, as they did in France and the Netherlands. The top positions in the two races in Austria went to Matteo Ferrari, with two wins; Héctor Garzó, second and third; Mattia Casadei and Eric Granado.

10th/9th Jordi Torres: “It was a bit of a tough day. In the first race we had a problem with the front tyre: it was vibrating a lot and I found it very difficult to lean, especially to the right. We managed to score some points for the championship, but these weren't good races for me. I tried to concentrate on my riding so as not to crash, and the group pulled away. In the second race, I felt more competitive, but I'm still struggling a bit with having to accelerate again after the slow corners. I make up for it when braking, but I can't get any further ahead. These were two races of survival and we continued to score points.”

12+1/17th Kevin Zannoni: “I didn't feel comfortable because I'm not taking risks as I would like to. Every time I try something new, I make mistakes. This year, I'm struggling to adapt to the changes that have been introduced. We have to find a solution as soon as possible because now it’s all back-to-back races. We'll keep working to make me feel better on the bike in the next races.”
