Torres will start tomorrow from sixth position, while Zannoni will do so from tenth position
Héctor Garzó has taken pole position at the French Grand Prix with an all time lap record record. Garzó has been the only rider able to lap under 1:40, which will allow him to start from pole position in both races at the second grand prix of the season. Italian Nicholas Spinelli has finished second, just 0.031 off Garzó's time, and third has been Eric Granado. Openbank Aspar Team rider Jordi Torres has been the sixth fastest and will start from the second row of the grid tomorrow. Torres has been in the top six all day: sixth in the first free practice, fifth in the second and sixth in Q2. The Spaniard is aware of what he needs to make a step forward in order to fight for the front positions on a track where he already knows what is to win.
Kevin Zannoni will place tomorrow on tenth position of the grid. The Italian rider has started the day in very competitive way in the first free practice and has finished second, four tenths off Garzó's best time. However, in the second session, in which the lap times have improved significantly, Zannoni has only been able to finish thirteenth. The Openbank Aspar Team rider has had to fight in Q1, a session in which he has set the fastest time, a 1:40.091 which at the time was the track record, but he has been unable to come back on track in Q2. With 30 seconds to go before the chequered flag in Q1, Alessio Finello has crashed and his bike has hit Zannoni's. As a result, the Italian has crashed and has been out of contention for Q2 as his bike has been badly damaged. The Openbank Aspar Team rider was confident he could fight for pole today: matching his Q1 time would have allowed him to start third on the grid. However, tomorrow he will be looking for a comeback from the fourth row.
6th Jordi Torres 1:40.307 (+0.312): "Today has been a positive day. Le Mans is a circuit that suits us well, where we have achieved good results and I have a bit more pressure. I have not felt completely comfortable either in practice or qualifying, every time I have gone out on track we have changed the bike quite a lot, but despite that we have been always in front. We have to find the key to feel comfortable, I always suffer in the corner entry and I end up turning a little late."
10th Kevin Zannoni (no time): "It has been a bittersweet day. I have started very strong, but I have not gone directly to Q2 due to a mistake on track. In Q1 we were showing our potential, I was first with a good time and I had a great pace. Unfortunately, I have crashed because of another rider: he has crashed and his bike has hit me. I have not been able to participate in Q2 because my bike was very damaged and I am very angry that I have not been able to get in qualifying the good result the team deserved. Tomorrow we will have to come back."
