Power Electronics Aspar Team must fight back in Austria

Jordi Torres will start the races in Austria from the third row of the grid, in seventh place, while his teammate Kevin Zannoni will do so from last position after crashing and failing to set a time in Q1

The Power Electronics Aspar Team is back to work after a long break since the Dutch GP weekend. Jordi Torres and Kevin Zannoni completed the practice and qualifying timed sessions of the third round of the MotoE World Championship this Friday at the Red Bull Ring circuit. The Spanish rider, who secured a direct pass to Q2 this morning, will start the two Austrian GP races from seventh place. Kevin Zannoni, however, was unable to get through Q1 after suffering an early crash and will start from 18th position tomorrow. Italian Matteo Ferrari achieved his first pole position of the season, followed by his compatriot Mattia Casadei and Brazilian Eric Granado.

The Austrian Grand Prix kicked off on Friday with the first practice sessions. Jordi Torres and Kevin Zannoni worked on fine-tuning their bikes and getting back into the rhythm of competition, a month and a half after the last race, which was held in the Netherlands. Jordi Torres and Kevin Zannoni went from strength to strength, improving both their times and their feelings on the Austrian track. The Spanish rider secured direct entry into Q2 after setting the eighth fastest time in practice. Kevin Zannoni, on the other hand, was just a few thousandths of a second away from achieving the same, meaning he had to go through Q1. In the afternoon, the Italian rider took to the track looking to secure one of the top two positions that guarantee a Q2 spot. However, an early crash at the first lap prevented him from doing so, and tomorrow he will have to fight his way up from the back row of the grid. Meanwhile, the Spanish rider set his best time of the day in Q2. Torres gave his all to secure a place on the front rows and start this weekend's two races from a good starting position. The Power Electronics Aspar Team rider was six tenths of a second off pole position and set a time of 1:38.578, which will see him start from seventh place tomorrow.

7th Jordi Torres 1:38.758: “I woke up excited to get back to work with the team, but it was a bit of a complicated day. In the first session, I didn't feel good with the tyres and couldn't lean the bike enough. I made a mistake and crashed, so in the second session I had no choice but to give it my all to get a spot in Q2. I managed to change my mindset and saved myself from some tricky situations. In qualifying, I went from less to more, but cautiously because the situation is a bit delicate in terms of tyre grip. Tomorrow we will have two difficult races, we have to be smart and I think there will be quite a few crashes, so we'll try to do our best.”

18th Kevin Zannoni (no time set): “The day didn’t go as we expected because I crashed in the first lap of Q1, which means that tomorrow I’ll start from last place. I didn’t feel great in free practice, but in qualifying I felt strong enough to make it through to Q2. It wasn’t to be, and I’m very sorry for the team. Tomorrow we'll have to make a good start to recover as much as possible in each race."
