Torres has finished in fifth and fourth position in Misano. Zannoni has crashed while leading the first race and has been fifth in the second
The MotoE World Championship has closed the 2024 season with a new champion, Héctor Garzó, who has only needed the first race of the weekend to mathematically secure the title. The 2023 champion, Mattia Casadei, ends this new season as runner-up, ahead of Óscar Gutiérrez. Openbank Aspar Team rider Kevin Zannoni has finished his best season in MotoE in fourth position.
In Misano, Zannoni has had a spectacular start in the first race. After starting from fifth position, he was already second in the first corner. With six laps to go, the Openbank Aspar Team rider has overtaken Casadei to take the lead. However, in the last corner of the penultimate lap, the Italian has crashed, ending with all his title options. After Zannoni's incident, Casadei has been left alone in the fight for the win, although his victory hasn’t been enough to prevent Garzó from taking the title. The Spanish has crossed the finish line in fourth position and has scored 13 points that made him mathematically champion. In the second race, Zannoni has tried to replicate his performance in the start, but he has been unsuccessful. The Openbank Aspar Team rider has not felt comfortable on the bike and hasn’t been able to fight with the leading group for the podium. Óscar Gutiérrez, Mattia Casadei and Eric Granado have exchanged the first three places throughout the race. In the end, Gutiérrez has won with Casadei second and Granado third. Zannoni was ridding in fourth place until the last lap, when his teammate Jordi Torres has overtaken him.
Torres has completed quite a positive weekend in Misano. The Openbank Aspar Team rider achieved yesterday his best qualifying position of the season and today he has started from the front row for the first time this year. In the first race, the Spanish has lost some positions in the first corners, although he has managed to stay in the leading group to finish fifth. In the second, Torres has been able to improve his result and has ended just off the podium after finishing in fourth position. The Spanish has ended his second season with the team in fifth position in the World Championship. The sum of Zannoni and Torres’ points leaves the Openbank Aspar Team in third position in the Teams’ World Championship, tied on points with the second.
Crash/5th Kevin Zannoni: “It has not been the weekend I expected in Misano. I was having a great first race, I have made an incredible start and, when I have got into the lead, I have set my pace to try to get away. Unfortunately, before starting the last lap I have crashed. I am very sorry to have wasted such a victory, especially because of the team's work. In the second race, I have started with the same objective, but I have not been able be as fast. I have felt different on the bike and I have suffered with the front. I have given my all and I have not been able to do more. It has been a pretty good season in which we have achieved victories, podiums and pole positions. I want to thank the Openbank Aspar Team for giving me the opportunity to fight for the championship until the last GP.”
5th/4th Jordi Torres: “I am really happy with the team, we have completed a very positive weekend. We started the GP pretty well and we have always been in front. We have one of the most competitive bikes on the grid and that allows me to ride really comfortably. The first race has been a bit difficult; my rivals were always getting away from me on the straights and I was recovering the distance on the braking. It has been very complicated for me to overtake. In the second race, which was the last of the year, I have given my all and I have managed to do two great overtakes. We have shown our teeth and we have shown that we are still here. Even though it has been a difficult year, I have learned a lot. I want to thank the team for this season.”
