The Italian rider has made two great comebacks from eighth position to achieve his first victory and a third place
Kevin Zannoni and the Openbank Aspar Team are the new MotoE leaders. The Italian rider has been the clear protagonist of the two Catalan GP races, with a third place first and a maiden victory, later. The Italian has completed two great comebacks on the Catalan track from eighth place to climb to the top step of the podium for the first time. With these results, Zannoni becomes the new MotoE leader, only one point over Mattia Casadei and two over Óscar Gutiérrez, winner of the first race.
In this first race, the Openbank Aspar Team rider has completed a great start and has come back from eighth position to second place in the first corner. Zannoni has been fighting in the leading group throughout the race and has even become the leader in the first part. In the end, he has finished in third position, behind Óscar Gutiérrez and Eric Granado. In the second race, Zannoni has replicated the script, and after the first lap he was already in podium positions. However, it has not been until the first corner of the last lap when he has overtaken Gutiérrez to take the lead and, after saving a possible crash and controlling the sliding of his bike, he has achieved his first victory with the Openbank Aspar Team.
His teammate Jordi Torres has completed a very positive weekend in his home grand prix. The Spanish has finished seventh in the first race, a race in which he has not been able to push the tyres to be more competitive and fight with the front group. Later, in the second race, Torres has gone from less to more and has managed to recover positions until finishing fourth. The fourth round of the season for the Openbank Aspar Team riders will be next weekend at the Italian Grand Prix.
Kevin Zannoni (3rd/WIN): “Today has been a dream come true. Winning a World Championship race was something that my whole family and I had wanted since I was a kid. I am very happy. I want to thank my family and all the people who have supported me during difficult times, and especially the Openbank Aspar Team, which has made me feel at home from the first moment. I feel incredible with the bike, we are doing a great job.”
Jordi Torres (7th/4th): “Of everything we could achieve today, we have achieved the best. At Le Mans we learned that there are times when you have to finish seventh, like in the first race, and that better opportunities will come later. In the second race I have been stronger and I have had more fun, but we still have room for improvement. We have a good bike, we brake well, we are very competitive, and we have a team that is up to the task of being able to compete in races, as Kevin has done today. However, there is something that we are missing, we lack speed on the straight.”
