Rain spoils Gaviota GASGAS Aspar's plans

Ryusei Yamanaka scores a point in the Phillip Island chaos. David Alonso has suffered an incident on the second lap and has not been able to finish the race

Deniz Öncü has taken victory in the Australian Grand Prix after a race marked by difficult weather conditions. Moto3 riders have had to deal with the rain and wind of Phillip Island, but they have completed a race in which there have been many incidents. Dani Holgado, Vicente Pérez and Diogo Moreira have crashed out on a chaotic sighting lap, while nine riders have had to retire in a race that has ended up with Öncü in first place. The Turkish has fought for the win with Ayumu Sasaki until the last lap and has left the Japanese rider without the lead, although he is now only four points off Jaume Masià, who remains at the top of the overall standings after finishing eighth. Dani Holgado has ended thirteenth and leaves Australia with a disadvantage of 22 points with Masià. Joel Kelso has closed his home Grand Prix with his first podium in the category.

Rainstorm at the Australian Grand Prix has complicated the Gaviota GASGAS Aspar's plans. Ryusei Yamanaka started from sixteenth on the grid and has been able to overcome the difficulties to score a creditable point at Phillip Island. The Japanese rider has not taken any risk during a race that only eighteen riders have been able to finish and he has crossed the chequered flag in fifteenth position. His teammate David Alonso has suffered an incident on the second lap and, although he has rejoined the race waiting for a red flag, he has decided to retire with eleven laps to go. Despite this result, the Colombian remains fourth in the championship and leader in the rookie standings, with an advantage of 69 points over José Antonio Rueda with four Grands Prix races to go.

15th Ryusei Yamanaka (+1:06.638): “I have had a good start of the race, but it was difficult to control the situation. I have lost some positions because I didn't know the risk I could take. Normally I can see if I have good grip on the tyre, but not today.”

David Alonso (DNF): “It has been a dangerous race. I don't understand how I have crashed, I was on the straight and I have gone to the ground. We'll keep working and we'll be ready for Thailand.”
