The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider was just three thousandths away from achieving his first victory of the season. His teammate Marco Morelli finished eighth, his best result in Moto3
Máximo Quiles fought for victory until the very last metres of the season's opening race. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider was the only one able to keep up with David Almansa, who claimed his first Moto3 victory at the Thai Grand Prix. Quiles managed a very demanding race in Buriram and was on the verge of achieving his first win of the year, but ultimately crossed the finish line in second place, just three thousandths behind. Argentinian Valentín Perrone completed the podium in the lightweight category. Marco Morelli, the other half of the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team also passed the Thai GP race with flying colours, finishing eighth, his best result to date.
Máximo Quiles got off to a good start after starting qualifying on the second row of the grid. Despite being unfamiliar with the circuit, the Spaniard quickly adapted to the Buriram track and was in podium position from the early laps. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider was able to maintain a very high pace throughout the 19 laps to increase his lead over his pursuers. Halfway through the race, the leading group had shrunk even further and the victory was decided between two riders, one of whom was Quiles, who waited for the right moment to try to overtake his rival. After succeeding in the last corner, the Moto3 victory was decided in the final metres and Máximo Quiles crossed the finish line in second place, although by a very narrow margin of three thousandths. The rider thus secured his first podium of the year, his tenth in the category. On the other hand, his teammate Marco Morelli achieved his best result in Moto3. The Spanish-Argentinian also faced the Thai circuit for the first time and managed to climb up the field to catch up with the leading group. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider went from strength to strength in a race in which high temperatures played an important role in strategy. Finally, Morelli finished his first race with the team in eighth position.
2nd Máximo Quiles (+0.003): “I really enjoyed my first race in Thailand, although it was very difficult because of the heat. I was trying to stay behind the leader and rest a little, but the pace was very high. Before the last lap, my rear tyre was sliding a lot and I went wide. At that point, I knew I had to push to close the gap. I tried to block him in the last corner, but in the end he caught me. I lost my reference point a little and was able to stop the bike, but I don't understand how it happened in the end. I'm a little angry about the result, but the victory was very close. I'll take the positives, we've picked up some good points and now we'll continue working for the next races.”
8th Marco Morelli (+11.334): “I have mixed feelings after the race in Thailand. The work throughout the weekend has been good: we have speed, which is essential to be at the front, but we need to polish some details. I don't have to be so indecisive in the early laps, but it's a matter of gaining confidence in heavy braking. I learned a lot in this race, I had very good pace and even caught up with the group fighting for the podium, although in the end I couldn't be in that fight. It was a very hot race, but I'm happy with today. I think we can offer some good battles in the next races.”
