Quiles misses out on front row by 0.004

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider will start the first race of the season from fourth position on the starting grid

CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider Máximo Quiles fought for pole position and a place on the front row of the grid until the very last moments, despite facing a difficult qualifying session. The Spanish rider will start the Thai Grand Prix race from fourth position after missing out on the front row by just four thousandths, which will be occupied by David Almansa on pole, Álvaro Carpe in second and Adrián Fernández in third. Marco Morelli, meanwhile, continues to make progress and feels positive despite starting from the fourth row.

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team riders completed a demanding day of qualifying at Buriram. With the entire Moto3 duo classified directly for Q2, Máximo Quiles and Marco Morelli continued to improve their set-up in this morning's free practice, a session in which Quiles finished in the top 3. The key moment of Saturday came in the afternoon, when both riders took to the track to fight for a good position on the starting grid. Both Quiles and Morelli got out on the track quickly to set a good time from the outset. The Spaniard tried to ride alone, but heavy traffic on the track prevented him from setting a perfect lap. The Spaniard rode under 1:41 for the first time, and his 1:40.697 put him in fourth position, six tenth off pole position, but only four thousandths off the front row of the grid. On the other side of the box, Marco Morelli continues to show great progress in his adaptation to the bike and the team. The Spanish-Argentinian secured his place in Q2 and it was in this session that he set his best time of the weekend: 1:41.363. Morelli pushed hard until the last lap and tomorrow he will start the first race of 2026 from eleventh position, confident of scoring his first points with the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team.

4th Máximo Quiles 1:40.697 (+0.609): “It was a difficult qualifying session. On the first run, I rode alone to focus on myself, but on the second run, I tried to get some reference points because here you really notice it if you're behind someone. It was difficult to find them because there were a lot of riders stopping and no one wanted to push. I managed to get a slipstream on the straights, but this rider got in my way on some corners and that hurt me. I got a bit nervous and couldn't do a perfect lap. In that respect, I'm not 100% satisfied, but we got fourth place and the pace for the race is very good.”

11th Marco Morelli 1:41.363 (+1.275): “We had to suffer a bit because it was very hot and there was a lot of “chaos”. We had to remember how chaotic these sessions are, so we were able to learn a lot for the future. We have good pace and I'm not worried about starting a little further back. We've done a good job with the set-up with the team and we're more than ready for the race.”
