The CFMOTO Impulse Aspar Team rider will lead the starting grid in the intermediate category after breaking the circuit record
Dani Holgado has secured his first Moto2 pole position after a flawless Saturday. The CFMOTO Impulse Aspar Team rider set the pace today to break the track record and claim the top spot on tomorrow's starting grid. This will be the second time the Spaniard will start the race from pole position, although on this occasion he has achieved it officially, having previously done so due to a penalty imposed on Manu González. This time, Holgado will be joined on the front row by Jake Dixon in second place and Collin Veijer in third. David Alonso will have to make a good start to move up from the sixth row.
The second day at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has been very positive for the CFMOTO Impulse Aspar Team. Dani Holgado set the pace this morning, proving that he will be one of the riders to beat in Sunday's Moto2 race. The rookie in the intermediate category is working hard to prepare well for the race, something that is being reflected in the results. After securing direct entry into Q2 yesterday, he took to the track this afternoon ready to give it his all. Holgado was in the top three in the standings, but not satisfied with that, the CFMOTO Impulse Aspar Team rider made a final effort to set a time of 1:41.549. This time earned him a new record at the Catalan circuit and his first official Moto2 pole position by 84 thousandths. His teammate David Alonso was forced to compete in Q1 but the Colombian easily made it through the first session to face a very demanding Q2. The Moto3 world champion struggled to find the same feeling as in Q1 and was unable to improve his time, a 1:42.258 that relegated him to sixteenth position.
Pole Dani Holgado 1:41.549: “I'm very happy with what we did today and with having my first real pole position. Yesterday I had some doubts about the front tyre, but today, in the race simulation, it went much better than we expected. It gives me confidence to have a slightly calmer race tomorrow. I don't put pressure on myself or set goals; the only realistic one I set for myself is to give it my all on the track. We're not ready to ask for a result yet; we're in a sweet spot, and we have to try to continue along those lines without putting pressure on ourselves.”
16th David Alonso 1.42.258 (+0.709): “Today we made a step forward compared to yesterday in the areas where I had more room for improvement. We did very well in Q1, but I couldn't match my time in Q2; it was harder for me. In the race, I'll have to learn from the riders in front of me, who have very good pace, and try to find a way to enter the fast corners without letting the bike move too much. There will be two different races, at the start and when the tyres start to wear. We'll go out with no expectations, with the intention of coming out of the race having better understood our situation.”
